Swing by our auto repair shop if you are having any of the following problems. These problems are signs that your car’s alternator is going bad. We would be happy to test the alternator and replace it if it is no longer able to generate the voltage your car’s electrical system needs to power accessories and components. The alternator will last, on average, approximately 100,000 miles.
Accessory Malfunction
As we just mentioned, the alternator generates voltage for the electrical system. The electrical system uses this voltage to power your accessories. This includes things like the power windows and seats, the entertainment system, and the navigation system. These things will malfunction if they are under-powered.
Battery Light
You may also end up with the battery light on the dashboard that will not turn off because the alternator is going bad. This dashboard warning light covers the battery and the alternator.
Burning Wires
The alternator should only generate 14.5 volts. Anything higher than this can overheat the electrical system and cause the wires to get too hot. The heat of the wires can melt the insulation and the overheated electrical system can start to blow fuses in the fuse box.
Dead Battery
You may also end up with a dead battery if the alternator is going bad. Any voltage that is not used by your vehicle’s electrical system is sent to the battery to keep it charged. Consequently, if the battery does not have enough voltage, it will discharge.
Dim/Bright Lights
Another sign that the alternator is not producing enough voltage is dim headlights, interior lights, and taillights. If the alternator is producing too much voltage, all of your lights will be too bright. If the alternator is not providing steady voltage, the lights will flicker.
Frequent Stalling
One of the components that the alternator produces electricity for is the spark plugs. If your car has started to stall frequently and misfire while the engine is running, the alternator may not be sending enough electricity to the plugs and you may have one or more plug that is not firing.
Growling Noises
Finally, the alternator can start to make growling noises if it is going bad. You will hear these noises in the engine of your car. This is a sign that the alternator is wearing out internally and needs to be replaced.
