Your Car Will Overheat When the Thermostat Malfunctions

Let’s talk about the thermostat in the cooling system and what it does. As its name suggests, the thermostat keeps track of the engine’s temperature. It needs to do this so it can open up a valve to release the coolant into the water pump. The pump then moves the coolant through the engine to reduce the temperature so it stays normal. Arthur’s Automotive is going to list the signs that your thermostat is malfunctioning below. It’s important to replace the thermostat ASAP to avoid engine damage. Let’s talk more about this.

A Rusting Thermostat

The thermostat is protected by a housing that is made out of metal. This can be unfortunate if the thermostat starts to leak slowly. As the coolant pools around the thermostat housing, it starts to feast off the metal. Consequently, the thermostat will start to rust. Replacing the thermostat at this stage saves you additional problems in the future. Now, let’s talk more about this.

A Serious Coolant Leak

If you don’t replace the rusted thermostat, the coolant will continue to eat away at the metal. Unfortunately, this will turn a slow leak into a serious one. When this happens, you will end up with coolant on the garage floor. In addition, your engine’s temperature may start to run hotter than normal. Again, it’s important to replace the thermostat to restore the engine’s normal operating temperature.

Weird Temperature Changes

Speaking of the normal operating temperature, an old thermostat will often go bad and failed to read the engine’s temperature correctly. When this happens, it won’t know when to release the coolant. Consequently, it may not release the coolant at all, or it may release the coolant at the wrong time. This will cause weird temperature changes in the engine that will be reflected on your temperature gauge. Your engine’s temperature will not regulate until you have the thermostat replaced with a new one.

Constant Overheating

Finally, whether the thermostat is malfunctioning or leaking, your engine is going to overheat very quickly whenever you start it. If your engine is running too hot, we recommend that you call for a tow truck to bring your vehicle to our shop. If you drive an overheating engine, you run the risk of causing serious damage. This damage can include a cracked head gasket or engine block.
